Clay pigeon - 20th March 2005
Race Report from round 1 of the British Super 1 Kart Championship - Clay Pigeon Race Circuit
Good weather greeted the first round of the Rotax British championship at Claypigeon in Somerset. It was a very up and down weekend for Jack as he made his British Championship debut. The grid was big with a total of 60 drivers in Junior Max meaning there would be A, B and C finals.
Qualifying – After 1 and a half days testing Jack had started to get to grips with the track and was running about mid pack. But in his qualifying session never managed to put in a really good lap and ended up 37th out of 60 going 2tenths slower than his previous fastest. Chris palmer was the man who got pole 7 tenths of a second quicker than Jacks time.
Heat 1 – Starting 14th on the grid for the first heat of the day Jack managed to survive a very hectic start and make a few places into the chicane and from the on spent the rest of the race trying to catch number 90 Mathew Tipping but couldn’t quite catch him so finished the race in a solid 10th position. A great start to the day.
Heat 2 – On Grid 22 for the his second heat of the day, things didn’t go as well at the start as Jack got pushed out wide on to the grass at the top hairpin and ended up dead last. For the rest of the race Jack played catch up and ended up finishing 24th.
Heat 3 – Starting 2nd on the grid for the final heat of the day, Jack got an awful start and was down to 5th by the first lap from then on nerves set in and Jack slowly moved down the field eventually finishing a poor 10th.
B final – Jack managed to qualify 8th for the B final not quite making the A final but it wasn’t over yet because if Jack could finish in the top 4 he would move up into the A final.
Jack got a storming start and was up to 4th by the 1st lap and sitting behind 3rd placed man Richard Mitcham. But with Sodi kart driver Daniel Lloyd on his bumper Jack didn’t want to lose his top 4 position so dived down the inside of Mitcham into the second hairpin. Jack managed to make a combatable gap between himself Lloyd, from then on Jack just sat behind the 2 leaders David Mcdonald and James Stephen to claim his place in the A final.
A final – Starting at the back of the A final after qualifying through the B final Jack got a decent start and made up 2 places by the first lap. Jack steadily moved up through the field and by the end of the race had made up 7 positions and finished a solid 24th position.
A good start leaving Jack in the top half of the championship. ROLL ON SHENNY!
