Super 1 British Championship - Round Three
PF International
9th July 2006
Qualifying – Although Jack was suffering from a back injury he was still confident going into qualifying and he delivered a decent performance. He posted a 46.81 which was enough to place him 3rd in his group and 5th overall only 0.18 of a second behind the pole man Luke Varley.
Heat 1 – Jack started P3 for the first heat of the day and he was very quick off the line and straight into 2nd after the first corner. But Jack struggled with grip for a few laps as his tyres took a while to come on and he dropped back down to 4th. In the second half of the race Jack’s tyres started to work and he managed to catch Devon Modell in 3rd but couldn’t quite get past despite a last lap battle with the CRG driver.
Heat 2 – Jack was on grid 23 for the heat 2. Jack got a good start and quickly started picking his way through the field eventually finishing in 12th just behind Bradley Smith.
Heat 3 – Jack was 14th on the grid for the final heat of the day and Jack made no mistakes off the line as he quickly moved up into the top 10. Jack then made his way up to 4th just behind number 90 Tom Fawcett but a misjudged move knocked Jack back down to 8th.
Final – After some average heats Jack lined up P5 on the grid. Jack made a great start as he made his way past Modell and Bayer-Goldman into the first bend. Jack then had his sites on the 2nd placeman Daniel Lloyd and he quickly made his way past through the complex. But by lap 4 Jack was struggling with a problem which after the race turned out to be one of the clutch springs, which had given way. Jack inevitably fell back down to 3rd as a racy Lloyd began to charge after the leader Luke Varley. Jack spent the rest of the race in 3rd and despite some late pressure from Daniel Payne hung on to take 3rd and a lot of championship points. Luke Varley just managed to take the win from Daniel Lloyd after a last gasp effort on the final lap. 4th was Daniel Payne, 5th was Liam Fenwick and rounding out the top 6 was Amanda Lassu.
“It has been a good weekend for me in terms of the championship and has thrown the championship wide open. In the final I thought I had the pace to challenge the leaders but obviously the clutch problem didn’t help me at all. But I’m not going to make excuses and id like to congratulate both Luke and Daniel for driving a good race. I still think there is a little bit more to come from the overall package and we can work on that in testing. But overall the team did a great job. I am now 3rd in the championship on dropped scores and only 10 points behind the leader and with my local track up next (Wigan) I think I am in with a chance of winning the championship. But anything can happen and it will be hard so I’ll just have to see what happens.”
