Super 1 British Championship (round 4)
PF International - 10th July 2005
Good weather greeted the fourth round of the Rotax British championship at P.F.International in Lincolnshire. The grid was big with a total of over 50 drivers in Junior Max meaning there would be A and B finals.
Qualifying – After a very up and down 1 and a half days testing with Jack being fast in some sessions but failing to finish 3 of the sessions it left Jack feeling rather nervous about qualifying not knowing where he would figure up on the timing sheets. But luckily enough Jacks Kart was strong as well as his engine and he was able to squeeze into the top 10 by qualifying 8th on the grid 3 hundredths of second behind team mate Sam Tordoff.
Heat 1 – Starting 4th on the grid for the first heat of the day Jack managed to retain his position on the first lap but as they raced towards the second hairpin Jack Whelan passed Hawksworth into the corner to move Jack back to 5th. For about the next 4 laps Jack drove a lonely race just hanging on to the back of Jack Whelan and Danny Lloyd, but coming out of the second hairpin Whelan and Lloyd tangled and Jack took full advantage moving up to 3rd place behind Thomas Arme and Sam Bennet but it didn’t last for long as Matthew Tipping made a touch and go move on Jack going round the spoon just managing to push Jack out wide with Chris palmer following him through too, and that’s how it finished with Jack finishing a solid 5th.
Heat 2 – On Grid 18 for the his second heat of the day and Jack made a superb start moving up to 13th place after the first corner and after that Jack slice through the field to finish a strong 8th after starting 18th on the grid.
Heat 3 – Starting 16th on the grid for the final heat of the day and yet again Jack made a decent start moving up through the field till eventually by the fourth lap he was in 5th position but after a massive collision involving some other drivers (thankfully no one was hurt) the race was red flagged and a restart was to be made. Unluckily for Jack the restart was not as he had hoped and he got nudged on at the second corner and found himself back down in 9th position from 4th after that Jack battled with William Masters eventually edging him out for 7th position.
A final – After some very strong heats Jack qualified 5th on the grid for the final. Jack made a decent start and kept his position round the first corner. But on the second tour round number 90 Mathew Tipping got a black flag moving Jack instantly up to 4th position but with Adam Christo now putting Jack under pressure Jack lost the place to him on the lap 8 and that was how it finished with Bennet 1st Christo 2nd Harper 3rd Arme 4th and Hawksworth 5th wrapping up some good championship points.
“I am very happy with my first top 5 at the British Championship and now look forward to the next round of the Rotax European Championship which is in Austria where im currently lying 3rd in the championship. Once again I thank HRS Motorsport and my mechanic Brian for giving me a great setup and my Dad for supporting me.”
