The 2005 Rotax Max Cup

Three Sisters

There was a strong field of 33 Junior Rotax Max’s for the annual Rotax Max Cup at Three Sisters Race circuit near Wigan. After a wet Friday practice and a dry Saturday practice Jack was relatively happy and optimistic about the karts handling and hoped to be up there challenging for the win.

Heat 1 Starting 16th on the grid as the 1st heat of the day got underway, but a dreadful start by Jack lost him many positions at the start and made it very difficult for him to carve his way through the field, but a solid drive pulled him up to an average 12th place. Not the best way to start the day.

Heat 2 Jack started pole for the 2nd heat and managed to keep the lead round the first corner, but as the field swept round for the second lap of the race Sam Tordoff and Ben Cooper got the run on Jack coming on to the start finish straight and relegated Jack to 3rd place. For the next 2 laps Jack stayed in 3rd place behind Cooper and Tordoff until they came down to paddock bend where Jack passed Tordoff moving him up to 2nd and hot on Ben Coopers tail. Slowly but surely Jack spent the next few laps reeling Cooper in until Jack slipped up the inside of Ben at the end of the straight moving up in to 1st again and that was how it finished, with Jack repairing some of the damage done in the first heat.

Heat 3 Starting 31st on the grid for the final heat and Jack new it was going to be a tuff one and as soon as they were under way there was chaos at the first corner, with Jack having to take to the grass to avoid the collisions, after some hard racing Jack managed to scramble home in 15th even though he had a coming together with Ayrton Hirst in the dyeing laps.

Final After some up and down heats Jack started the final from 6th on the grid. As the karts approached the start line there was some confusion in the inside row which Hawksworth took full advantage of and came out of the first corner in 3rd place on the back of Jack Whelan and Ben Cooper. On the third lap Jack managed to squeeze past Ben coming down the Valley moving up to second behind Jack Whelan who had managed to pull a few kart lengths over Jack and Ben while they had been battling. Thomas Stackhouse was now also putting Jack under pressure as they tried to chase Whelan. On lap 12 Cooper managed to squeeze his way back up the inside of Jack in to the double left hander pushing Jack down to 3rd but as they entered the last lap Jack was still very close to cooper and as they came down in to the left hander before Lunar Bend Jack managed to squeeze down the inside of Cooper and steel 2nd place. That’s how it finished with Whelan taking the win, Hawksworth 2nd Pickles 3rd Cooper 4th and Stackhouse rounding out the top5.

Jack now looks forward to Genk in Belgium for the last round of the Junior Rotax Max European series.
