16th April 2006
Heat 1 – Starting the first heat of the day from 7th on the grid Jack got round the first corner safely and started to make his way up through the pack. By lap 6 Jack was up to 3rd until number 8 Jack Whelan managed to pass Hawksworth into the bottom corner. Jack nearly got back passed Whelan on the last corner but some good defending from Whelan meant that Jack would have to settle for 4th at the flag. Luke Varley took the fastest lap of the race at a 48.38.
Heat 2 – 20th on the grid second heat and Jack made a good start and quickly started to make his way up the field. Jack was chasing hard and quickly made his way up to 6th and on the second to last lap just managed to get past Andrew Tooley to take a solid 5th position. Rob Foster Jones set the fastest lap of the race at a 48.66.
Heat 3 – 15th on the grid for the final heat of the day and Jack once again made a decent start to the race and had worked his way up to a solid 8th by the last lap. Despite an attempt to snatch 7th at the bottom of corner Jack had to settle for 8th just behind number 66 Daniel Payne. David Sutton took the fastest lap of the race at a 48.26.
A-Final – After some solid heat results Jack qualified 3rd on the grid for the final with Rob Foster Jones on pole, Jack Whelan on P2 and Greg Harper alongside Jack on P4.
After several false starts and one red flag the race finally got under way and Jack made good use of the inside line to move up into 2nd place after the first corner. By lap 3 Jack was back down to 5th as Jack Whelan and Greg Harper both slipped down the inside of him into the first hairpin. Jack pulled him self back up to 4th as he followed Daniel Payne past Rob Foster Jones into the first hairpin. Jack was now right behind Payne who in turn was around 6 or 7 kart lengths behind the leading 2 of Jack Whelan and Greg Harper. As the race came into the final 4 laps Jack and Payne had now taken full advantage of the fighting Whelan and Harper and going into the last lap the leading 4 were now separated by next to nothing. As they came up to the 2nd hairpin Harper defended and Payne slipped up the inside of Whelan with Jack in turn making his way up the inside of Payne. Jack got a good run out of the hairpin and was now alongside Greg Harper on the inside of the straight as the 4 of them sped down to the bottom corner. 4 a breast down the straight was never going to be easy as contact between Payne, Harper and Jack was enough to give Whelan the edge into the corner. Jack looked to have 2nd until he out braked him self on the dirty side of track and allowed Payne back through. Jack had to settle for a creditable 3rd as he crossed the line for what had been one of the closest races that he had ever been in. Jack Whelan took the win with a superb drive, Payne was a close 2nd and Jack also a close 3rd only 0.6 of a second behind the winner. David Sutton claimed 4th with a good drive up from P12 on the grid, Sutton also claimed the fastest lap of the race at a 48.40. 5th was Rob Foster Jones and rounding out the top 6 was number 15 Daniel Lloyd.
“ It was a superb race to be in and the last lap must have been fantastic to watch. I am disappointed not to have won but Jack Whelan drove a great race and he well deserved the win. I’d also like to thank the Protrain race team who have done a brilliant job with the kart this weekend and I look forward to the first round of the British Championship next weekend at the Lydd International Raceway.”
