BRDC Stars of Tomorrow Round 2
Rowrah - 7th May 2006
|
Heat 1 – The first race of the day and the first wet race of the weekend was sure to mix things up as the kart exited out on to the circuit. Jack was starting on p8 and made a good start and was already up to 3rd after the first lap. Jack helped himself to another position as Lloyd out braked himself in the slippery conditions at the end of straight. Now up to 2nd Jack set about reeling in the leader Daniel Payne and with only 2 laps to go Jack snatched the lead and managed to hold on to the end of the race. Jack also claimed the fastest lap of the race at a 58.51.
Heat 2 – After a good start to the day Jack lined up on p3 for the start of the second heat and immediately made and impression by taking up the lead on lap 2. But as the karts came round for lap four Jack was suffering with big handling problems and was quickly being swallowed up by the rest of the field. Jack was now down to 3rd and with a gaggle of karts behind him he started to defend quite heavily. Jack kept his cool under pressure but couldn’t hold off David Sutton, Rob Foster-Jones or Daniel Payne who made there way past relegating Jack to 6th.
Heat 3 – After a heat where Jack had struggled for pace a few alterations had been made to the chassis to see if Jack could get back on the pace. Starting 18th on the grid Jack didn’t get a very good start and once again was struggling with handling problems and could only manage 11th at the end of the race.
Final – After some solid heats Jack lined up 4th on the grid for the final but before the race it had looked like it was going to be wet and the team had taken a gamble to put a wet setup on the kart. The minute we were called down to the grid it stopped raining and the track was now perfectly dry. There was no time to revert back to the dry setup and with a much lower gear ratio than needed it was going to be a struggle. As the karts came up to the start line it was carnage as Jack was punted from behind into the back of kart number 55 Rob Foster-Jones with karts flying off left right and centre Jack somehow made a great start and was up to 2nd after the first corner. For the first few laps of the race Jack was able to live with the pace of the leader Dave Sutton. But come lap 4 Jack was really starting to struggle with straight-line speed and it was not a surprise when Josh Fielding made his move for 2nd on lap six. As the karts went into the final 4 laps Jack was now coming under pressure from number 5 Daniel Lloyd. With 3 laps left Jack took the narrow line into the second corner and with Lloyd looking round the outside out of Jacks vision. Jack came back across the track and without knowing left Lloyd no where to go. With Lloyd off this left Jack having to defend from Kenneth Andrews Devon Modell and Daniel Payne for the last lap of the race. Going into the second hairpin Andrews nudged Jack from behind and with no way of stopping the kart Modell and Payne quickly took advantage and dropped Jack back to 5th. Dave Sutton won with Fielding 2nd and Modell rounding out the podium positions. Fielding also took the fastest lap of the race.
“It’s been a very strange weekend and nothing seems to have gone my way. On Saturday we had the pace but an off in the third heat ruined my chances of challenging for the win but these things happen. Come Sunday I struggled for pace all day apart from the first heat and with the wrong setup in the final it was never going to be a superb result. Id also like to apologise for an incident in the final on Sunday which involved me and Daniel Lloyd, Going into the top hairpin I couldn’t see him on the left hand side of me and assumed he was behind me. Otherwise I would not have pulled out to take the corner. I guess it was just one of those weekend but I am happy to have still scored some decent points in the championship and hope that I can improve on this in the next round of the championship at Shenington in June”
