Heat 1 – Jack started the first heat of the day on grid 5 and quickly made his way into the top 3 before taking the lead on lap 3 as he sneaked up the inside of Project 1 driver Robert Foster-Jones into the Stratford hairpin. But it was short lived as the championship leader David Sutton relegated Jack back down to 2nd on the same corner. But only half a lap later Jack fought back and re gained the advantage. A lap late and Sutton was back passed and Jack was back down to 2nd. As they came across the line for the last lap Jack managed to once again regain the lead as he slipped underneath Sutton into café bend. Jack managed to hold on to the race win just in front of Robert Foster-Jones who managed to pip David Sutton to 2nd with Sutton eventually finishing 3rd.
Heat 2 – After a good first heat, Jack started 16th on the grid for heat 2 and quickly started to make his way into the top 10 before a spirited drive lifted him into contention for the win. When Fielding and Lassu had some contact it made the job much easier for Jack as he slipped through to take his second win of the day.
Heat 3 – So far so good and as Jack went into the last heat he new all he had to do was keep it on the Island in a decent position to take Pole Position for the final. Jack had a hectic race eventually moving up to 5th before getting stuck behind the battle for 3rd involving David Sutton and Amanda Lassu. Jack managed to make his was up into 4th but it wasn’t enough to catch the leading pair of Payne and Stephenson who had pulled out a healthy margin.
Final – After a nearly perfect set of heats Jack started pole for the final and made no mistake on the first corner and held his advantage. But as the karts streamed into the Stratford hairpin Jack was pushed on and dropped down to 3rd behind Stephenson and Sutton. Jack quickly started to catch the leading duo and passed Stephenson into café corner on lap three. Four laps later Jack made his move for the lead at Stratford and dropped David Sutton back down to 2nd. Jack then managed to pull out a 6 kart length advantage and was looking good for his first national win. Going into the last 3 laps Jack was now struggling with grip levels as his tyres started to overheat and with David Sutton on the charge it was definatley going to be a close last lap. As the leading 2 went into the Bruno chicane for the last time Jack left the door slightly open and Sutton dived up the inside to take an epic victory to what had been a fascinating race. Jack had to settle for 2nd knowing that had he taken a tighter line into the chicane he might have just secured his first win of the Stars of Tomorrow campaign. So it was Sutton who took the win from Hawksworth in 2nd Daniel Lloyd 3rd Daniel Payne 4th Devon Modell 5th and rounding out the top 6 Amanda Lassu.
“I was very happy with the way the heats went and I was very pleased to have taken pole position for the final I new once I was in front by the mid race distance that I needed to push hard because David (Sutton) was starting to catch me. I made an error into the chicane on the last lap, which cost me the race. Obviously I’m annoyed with myself for making the mistake but hopefully I can learn from that and try to put the pressure back on the championship leader as the second half of the season approaches. I took a few points out of David today and with only 3 of the 12 rounds to count there is still a long way to go in the championship and I still feel I can mount a serious challenge for the title. Also well done to David Sutton for the win and Daniel Lloyd for claiming his first podium at national level”
