Super 1 British Championship - Round 4

Three Sisters

17th September 2006

Qualifying – Jack went out in qualifying knowing he had the pace to be able to challenge for pole position. For the first ¾ of the 10 minute qualifying session Jack knuckled down and put in some consistent 44.8s. Jack then decided to back off and wait for a driver he could follow and hopefully get the slipstreaming effect up the long back straight. It didn’t work out however and Jack couldn’t improve on his time. Jack’s time put him a solid 5th and only 0.09 of second of pole position, which was held by Mitchell Bayer-Goldman.

Heat 1 – Jack started the first heat of the day from 3rd on the grid and made sure he took the advantage of starting on the inside of the track and moved up to second behind Bayer-Goldman after the first corner. However Jack was struggling to get out of the double left hander in the middle of the circuit and was losing bettween 1 and 2 kart lengths everytime they exited that part of the circuit. In the end Jack finished 3rd.

Heat 2 – Jack was 20th on the grid for his second heat and after a red flag the race finally got underway and Jack made no mistakes in finding his way through the field. Jack made his way quickly up into the top 10 before he caught the leading group. Jack managed to squeeze his way past Luciano Bachetta for 6th to finish just behind Liam Fenwick for a solid 2nd heat.

Heat 3 – After 2 good heats Jack looked to round it off with a good result in his last heat. But it wasn’t to be as Robert Foster-Jones took Jack off at the first corner dropping Jack way down the grid and damaging his chances of the championship severely. To Jacks credit he did manage to fight his way back to 16th but it was not the result he wanted.

Final – After the incident in heat 3 Jack was forced to start on grid 7 for the final and he new he would have his work cut out if he was to challenge for the win. Jack made a poor start and dropped back to 8th behind Luke Varley at the start. Jack then made his move for 7th and began his charge up the order. Jack made his way through to 5th behind Devon Modell before Luke Varley relegated Jack back to 6th. Jack then made his way back past and pulled alongside Devon as they went towards the valley. Devon started to come across on Jack and they had some contact as Devon managed to hang on to 4th. But a lap later Jack was past and set off trying to catch Bayer-Goldman and William Herron who had pulled out a two second gap over Jack. It wasn’t long before Jack really started to turn on the pressure as he lapped with in 0.05 of a second for 6 continuous laps as he charged after the top 3. But time was against Jack and despite his best efforts he couldn’t quite get 3rd finishing just lengths behind at the finish. David Sutton took the win.

“The final didn’t quite go to plan but I thought I drove as well as I could and I really enjoyed the race because it was high tempo and I had a really good battle in the middle section of the race with Devon and Luke. The third heat really damaged my chances of winning the championship but when someone takes you off like that there is nothing you can do. But I am not one to give up and I will now concentrate on trying to win the European Series in a weeks time.” Jack Hawksworth
