British Super 4 ICC championship - Round 3
Dunkeswell - 24th June 2007
|
Testing - After a podium a week earlier at the 4th round of the Super ICC stars championship I had turned my attentions to the ICC national championship where I hoped to go one better and score some much wanted points. It was my first time at Dunkeswell and I thought the circuit was very exciting with some challenging hairpins, fast sweepers and a fast back straight (90mph+). Testing went well and we found a good set-up in dry and wet conditions setting a fastest time of 43.25 in the dry. We did however struggle in intermediate conditions and there is some definite room for improvement in this particular area.
Heat 1 – After a good day testing expectations were high and the track was soaked after a lot of rain the previous night. I started on grid 10 for the first heat and made a great start and was up to 3rd after the first corner. For the next three laps I was behind the Welsh driver Delmi Davis, but I managed to out brake him into the fourth corner and take 2nd. I was now a couple of seconds behind race leader Sam Moore. The kart felt very good and I was 3 tenths faster than any one else. I closed in on Moore but ran out laps just as I had reeled him in.
Heat 2 – The track was now dry and I was on grid 26 for the second heat of the day and after a storming start in the first heat was hoping for much of the same. I got off the line well but found myself boxed in between two karts. I took to the outside of the circuit for the first corner and managed to make up a place but carnage at the tight left hand bend that followed allowed me to jump up to 21st. I quickly made my way through the traffic passing John Church, James Holman, Jack Angus and some more drivers of names I cant remember. By the last two laps I was in 9th and finally in free air. I managed a 45.94 on my last lap which was the fastest lap of the race.
Heat 3 – After two decent heats I was looking for another solid result in the final heat where I would start from P9 on the grid. I got boxed in at the start of the race and had to no where to go so had to back off and protect my 9th place. After that I managed to slice through the pack making most of my moves at the first corner. By the end of the race I was into 2nd and chasing down the leader Will Hibbert. Despite a good result I struggled with chassis handling in this heat and a few changes needed to be made if I was to win the final.
Final – After some good heats I was on the front row of the grid alongside Sam Moore and Lee Stamp. It had just rained before the final but with the track drying extremely quick most drivers had opted for slick tyres which was the right choice. I got off the line well and led the field into the first corner but the circuit was very greasy and I went in a bit too hot and lost a couple of positions. I couldn’t get any heat into the tyres for the first few laps and slipped back to 7th. After lap 4 the tyres started to work and I was able to begin to fight back. I quickly made my way past 3 drivers before latching on to the back of 3rd place, Sam Moore. A tangle between Moore and Chequets allowed me to pass both of them and get after the leader Jody Whitmore.
Whitmore was defending quite hard but I managed to squeeze past at the third hairpin but in doing so allowed Will Hibbert to get the run on me. I was now in 2nd and behind Hibbert. I closed in on Will and on the last lap we were practically touching but with limited amount of places to pass in the slippy conditions my only opportunity was going to be into the first corner. I got into the slipstream and Hibbert defended the inside line. I switched to the outside of the circuit to try pressurise Hibbert into a mistake but he managed to keep his head and held the inside line so that I couldn’t sneak through. Sam Moore was also directly behind me so I also had to watch out for him trying to pass me. I managed to hold Moore off but there was no way past Hibbert and I had to settle for 2nd in the race. This result has left me 2nd in the championship (dropped scores taken into account) behind my main rival Sam Moore who has a 16 point gap over me. With three rounds left and my season starting to gather momentum this is a gap I can definitely close. But some work in getting the tyres to come on earlier in the races is needed if I am to stop Sam Moore from claiming his second British championship in as many years. The chassis was great and the engines were also very strong thanks to everyone who helped me.
Jack will next be in action at the Rowrah circuit in two weeks time for the 4th round of the championship where he will be aiming to go 1 better than he did at Dunkeswell.
