British Super 4 ICC Championship (round 5) - Kimbolton
9th September 2007

Testing – The forecast was dry for all weekend which was great news and there was bound to be some great racing. Testing went well and we found a good balance with the chassis. We were on the pace but were struggling with a slight loss of straight line speed in comparison to a couple of the drivers who were using Pavasi motors. Other than the minor engine issue I was confident that I could take my opportunity’s and challenge for the win.
Heat 1 – We had changed our jetting setup for race day and fortunately this had made a world of difference and we now had plenty of straight line speed. I started 18th for the first heat of the day and as soon as the lights went green I was able to make very quick progress. Before long I was inside the top 10 and with 4 laps to go I was into 3rd behind James Holman and Daniel Borton. Unfortunately another driver had crashed at the first corner and the yellow flags were out at this corner which made overtaking very difficult as the first corner is where overtaking is easiest. I was stuck behind the two drivers until the last lap when I managed to get past Borton with two corners to go. A great start to the day coming from 18th on the grid to 2nd.
Heat 2 – After a solid first heat I was looking for more of the same in the second heat of the day. Starting from 4th on the grid I made a good get away from the line but Will Hibbert defended his position and I had to go to the outside of the circuit to avoid the karts ahead. I lost three positions and went back to 7th and with a lot of the good drivers starting at the front in this heat it wasn’t going to be easy to get through. I managed to get back into 4th by lap 5 and was catching 3rd place man Tom Duggan towards the end of the race but ran out of laps and finished 4th.
Heat 3 – I started on grid 15 for the final heat of the day and got a great start off the line and was inside the top 10 by the end of the first lap. From there I made my way through the field quickly eventually finishing 2nd behind the winner number 4 Tom Atwill. Another great heat which would mean that I would start the final from pole position.
Final - After qualifying on pole position for the second time in as many weeks I was hoping I could get back to winning ways and secure my first victory since the Super ICC Stars round at Llandow. Unfortunately we had not banked on the air temperature dropping and the track getting colder for the final and we left the same setup on we had used in the heats. This was to be the downfall of my race as I could not get the tyres up to temperature quick enough. I got a good start from the line despite the driver next to me jumping the start slightly. I managed to just about defend my lead going into the first corner. For the next 7 laps I had no grip whatsoever and was expecting some one to overtake me shortly. Eventually on lap 5, Steven Lane managed to get past me into Kimbolton corner. He was able to create a decent sized gap between us over the next few laps and with Sam Moore and Daniel Borton in close attention I had to get the hammer down. On lap 7 the tyres finally started working and I was able to pull away from the chasing pack and start to hunt Steven Lane back down. Lane was consistent though and in the last few laps I only managed to get within 0.7 of a second of him.
After securing pole position for the final I was disappointed that I couldn’t take the win but there was nothing I could do in the first half of the race as the kart was handling terrible and in some respects I was lucky to even stay on the podium! Other than the final the chassis and engine had been good all day and we scored the most championship points out of anyone with a very good 122 points.
Unfortunately having had a disaster at Shenington where I didn’t score any points and having been fired off in the final at Rowrah I can no longer challenge for 1st in the championship as Sam Moore has now secured the title with one round remaining. Despite this we are a very comfortable 2nd and I will concentrate on securing this championship position and winning at the final round at the Lincolnshire circuit Fulbeck. Once again the kart was great and despite a lot of bad luck this year we have proved that we will be very strong contenders for the title in 2008 and if I can secure 2nd in the championship at Fulbeck that would be a great achievement in only my first year of racing in the UK’s premier category against older and much more experienced opposition.
