KF1 Winter Series - Round 1

PF International - 4th November 2007

Testing – The forecast was dry all weekend so it was going to be interesting to see where we figured in the standings after practice. As usual we used our hack motor for Friday and were only 2 tenths off the pace. We knew that with the race motor on we would be quick enough. The next day we had an up and down day with some very quick session and also some terrible sessions. We discovered on the Saturday night we had an engine problem. Confident we had sorted it I went in to Sunday in a fresh frame of mind.

1st Heat – I started 10th on the grid for the first heat of the day. Everybody went to the inside for the first corner so I took a chance and launched it round the outside overtaking 5 karts to come out in 5th position. We were quick and I was able to make good progress over the next few laps despite one driver weaving all over the circuit. By lap three I was into 2nd and right behind the leader Richard Bradley. I overtook him into the second hairpin but this compromised my exit speed and Bradley was able to pull alongside me into the next corner and re-take the place. I tried another move on him through the complex but he chopped me off and we had some contact. This allowed Truelove to get the run on me out of the corner we had some contact and it ripped my ignition switch off. I was out of the race but at least we were fast.

2nd Heat – I started 6th on the grid for this heat but didn’t quite make the start I had done in the previous heat. I struggled to find grip and dropped back to 8th at the end of the first lap. From there I managed to come through to take 4th. But I just wasn’t quick enough I had started to lose my pace from the previous heat.

Final – After a 4th and a DNF I lined up 8th on the grid for the final. I was 7th after the first lap and had a steady race eventually finishing 6th out of the 16 kart grid.

Following the race we discovered we still had the same engine problem that had caused us to slow over the course of Saturday and this explained our loss of pace as the day progressed. We have sorted it out now though and I expect we will be fighting for victory at the next round at Shenington on December 2nd.
