Midland Championship - Rissington

2nd September 2007

Testing – There was only three test sessions on the Saturday before racing started so it was always going to be hard to get the perfect set-up with limited track time. Fortunately we did a good job and the chassis and engine were great and we were on the pace.

Heat 1 – I started the first heat of the weekend from grid 3. I got a great start and took the lead. From then on I gradually pulled away from the rest of the field to win by a margin of over 4 seconds.

Heat 2 – I started 12th on the grid for this heat but didn’t quite get the start I had hoped for as I got boxed in at the start by some slower starting drivers. Fortunately the kart was very good and I was able to slice my way through the pack to finish a creditable 3rd.

Heat 3 – After two good heats I knew that another top three would be enough to gain me pole position for the all important final ahead of my main rival at the weekend Scott Allen. I started 11th on the grid and got a very good start and was up to 6th after the first lap. From there I made my way to the front of the pack to take the win despite some late pressure from Steven Lane.

Final – After three great heats I was on pole for the final with Scott Allen alongside me. I made a good start and held the lead for the first four laps before Allen passed me into the first corner on lap 5. I settled in behind Allen for the next three laps until I realised that Steven Lane was closing us both down. I decided to pass Allen at the end of the back straight and retook the lead. For the next three laps we changed places frequently giving the spectators some excellent racing to watch. I was leading as we went into the last lap but the last lap board came out very late just as I came upto the line and therefor I didn't defend. This allowed Scott Allen to retake the lead. He then defended vigorously for the rest of the lap. I decided the only way to get past would be to out brake him on the outside of the circuit into the fast right corner where I knew he would be defending I launched my kart down the outside of him but with limited grip on the outside of the circuit it was a lost cause and this allowed Steven Lane to take second position off me as well. If it had been a British championship round then I wouldn’t have tried to go round the outside but with it being the Midland championship and having nothing to lose I thought I might as well give it a go. So overall it was a strong weekend where maybe if the last lap board had come out just a few seconds earlier I might have won the race. But it wasn't to be. Despite this it was a stunning race.
