German KZ2 Championship - Round 3

Ampfing, Germany

Jack Hawksworth, leading Verdi Guertz and Rick Dreezen through the chicane at Ampfing in Germany 2008 Testing – I arrived in a confident mood for the German Championship having put a frustrating weekend in Mariembourg behind me. I new I had the pace to challenge for the podium but with the likes of Lammers, Dreezen, Geurts and Hanssen all racing in the 39 driver strong field it was going to be a tough weekend. I was reletivley average in testing and I was probabley around 10th quickest in Friday testing but a few changes to the chassis over night quickly boosted me into the top 5 for morning practice.

Qualifying – The kart felt quick in qualifying and I was able to use this to my benefit by qualifying a solid 5th which would put me out of the carnage and at the front for all my heats.

Heat 1 – I started 4th for the first heat of the day and got a good start and was quickly up to 2nd. I held this until lap eight until Dreezen and Meindorf got past and relegated me to 4th. I kept pushing though and managed to get Meindorf on the last corner to finish 3rd.

Heat 2 – I was on grid 3 for the second heat and I once again got a good start and was into the lead by the first corner. Bas Lammers managed to take the lead away from me in the middle of the race but I stay consistent to take a decent 2nd place which would place me on grid 4 for the Pre-Final the following day.

Pre Final – Bright sunshine once again beamed down on the German track and it was race day. We decided to use my 2 new tires for the pre-final in order to help me achieve pole position for the final which would enable me to hold off the quick guys on the first few laps. I got a good start and was straight up to 3rd after the first lap and a lap later was into 2nd. I set about catching the leader and managed to get through on lap 5. I managed to hold on for the win despite some late pressure from Rick Dreezen.

Hawksworth wins in Ampfing Germany Final – I had the advantage of starting from pole position for the final thanks to my victory in the pre-final but with all my rivals starting with 2 new tires it was going to be tough to keep them behind over the first section of the race. I made a solid start and kept the lead, the kart felt good and I was able to push hard over the first few laps to try keep my rivals behind. It wasn’t until lap eight that Bas Lammers took the lead away from me. I was now in 2nd and briefly demoted to 3rd by Dreezen but I was able to get him back at the following corner. Over the next few laps I managed to reel Bas Lammers back in and on lap 14 made my move for the lead into the last corner, we touched and he was just able to hang on to the lead but I got the slip stream up the main straight and was just able to squeeze past and back into the lead. The next 10 laps I just had to keep my composure and make sure I didn’t make any mistakes which could have given Dreezen the opportunity to come past me. As it was I managed to keep it on the black stuff and take a superb win for myself and the PDB Racing team.

A great weekend where we chose the right settings and strategy paid off. The Gillard chassis and AFR TM engines were great. I am getting stronger with every race and im sure if we keep pushing hard to go faster we will celebrate many more wins this season. Thanks guys!
