CIK-FIA European KZ2 Championships, Round 1 - Angerville, France

1st/4th May 2008

Jack Hawksworth in testing on his PDB Gillard at the first round of the 2008 KZ2 European Championship Testing – What an experience my first race in the European Championships and with 104 of the best KZ2 drivers in Europe entered and hot weather it was going to be extremely difficult. After a strong start to my WSK campaign I was confident I could be at the sharp end once again at the European Championship. We were at the sharp end but more surprisingly we were the point at the end of the sharp end we were rapid from the word go. We had a brand new frame to try for this race and it was superb and we had also found some time with the TM engines thanks to Andy and Sue at AFR Racing. We were quickest in every session and me and the team were looking forward to the racing!

Qualifying – I qualified top of my group in qualifying and 3rd overall a tenth off the quickest but on my fast lap I hit traffic and that compromised my final sector as I lost 0.2 which was the difference between being on pole. A good start and I would be starting at front out of the carnage in the middle.

Heat 1 – I started pole for heat 1 and got a good start and held my lead into the first corner. From that point onward I was able to ease out a gap on my rivals and win the first heat.

Jack Hawksworth wins every heat at the 2008 KZ2 European Championship Heat 2 – I started P2 for this heat and was alongside pole sitter and championship rival Tony Lavvanant with Kevin Jannsen directly behind me it was going to be hard heat. Fortunately I got a superb start and was into the lead by the first corner, the kart was brilliant and I was able to pull away and cruise home to another win.

Heat 3 – I started pole once again for the third heat and it was much the same as the previous heats. A good start and then I was able to pull away and win again.

Heat 4 – I started 2nd on the grid for the fourth heat and got a great start again and was lead every lap of the race to take the chequered flag.

Heat 5 – I once again started on pole for this heat and was able to ease out a big gap to win once again and secure the all important pole position for Race 1.

Race 1 – The start of the European Championship and I was on pole I was a bit nervous but couldn’t wait to get on the circuit and try get my first win in my debut race. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be as I got my start wrong and jumped the start by a small margin I was given a ten second penalty when I came over the start line for the third time. I was gutted but new I had to push hard to get as far out in front as I possibly could to score as many points as I could and start as near the front as possible for Race 2. The kart was brilliant and I won by 3.9 seconds but with the 10 second penalty I was classified 7th. I new I had to pick myself back up and get a good result in Race 2.

Jack Hawksworth on the podium at the first round of the 2008 KZ2 European Championship Race 2 – Starting 7th on the grid for Race 2 it was important to stay out of trouble in the first few laps and then get the hammer down and try gain as many places as possible. I got a safe start and was in 8th after the first 2 laps from then on came through really well the Gillard chassis and TM engine was working in perfect harmony and I was able to use this to overtake and catch the guys in front. Angerville is not an easy track to overtake on so I had to do a few lunges into the hairpin which was good fun! By lap 16 of the 21 I was into 2nd and chasing down the PCR driver who was leading on the last lap I was very close but needed another 2 laps to have a go at an overtaking manoeuvre. So it was 2nd place at the flag, 20 points and a trip to the podium. If you had told me before the weekend that I was going to finish 2nd I would have been delighted but to have been in the position to win both finals if not for a false start was hugely annoying. Me and the team lie 3rd in the standing overall after the first round but I think we showed everyone that we are going to be hard to beat this year and that our competitors wont get lucky with 10 second penalties at the other rounds.

A big thanks to all the people who were supporting me it is greatly appreciated and a big thanks to the PDB guys, Tim Gillard and AFR Racing for giving me the opportunity to show what I am capable of doing on their superb kit. Great job guys let’s go 1 better in Belgium!
