CIK-FIA European KZ2 Championships, Round 5 and 6 - Varennes-Sur-Allier, France

6th/7th Sept 2008

Testing – I was in a confident mood before testing and believed from the recent tests we had conducted at the circuit that I could be very competitive. The start of testing was wet and the chassis felt good, we made some alterations for the second wet session and didn’t really make any progress but still the lap times were competitive. Then the track dried up and the dry sessions were ok the chassis wasn’t bad but we lacked all round grip. I wasn’t 100% confident we had the set-up right after the testing and I knew qualifying was going to be tough.

Qualifying – My predictions for qualifying were wrong we took a gamble with the set-up and were well off the pace finishing up 28th overall 5 tenths off the fastest time. Not a great start.

Heat 1 – The next day we were greeted by constant heavy rain. The bad qualifying meant I would start all four of my heat race from grid 12. In the first heat there was confusion at the start with the lights not working properly. I was up to 11th after the first lap and from there was able to get 5th position at the flag.

Heat 2 – I made a good start in heat 2 and was quickly into the top 8 I got my head down and nailed a few more positions over the next few laps. I finished 3rd at the end. A solid start.

Heat 3 – The track was still wet for the 3rd and final heat of the day. This time I got an unbelievable start and was into 3rd by the end of lap 2. I fought hard to catch the 2nd place driver Joey Hanssen but once I caught him my tires started to over heat and I slowly fell back off him but managed to keep 3rd position untill the end. 5th 3rd and 3rd from 12th on the grid was a good days work and I now had a good nights sleep before my next heat on the Sunday.

Heat 4 – After all the rain Sunday brought finally some good weather and in morning practice we solved the setup issues we had, had in qualifying. I once again started on grid 12 and got a super start and was into 4th after the second lap. We were flying and I thought I could win the heat but unfortunately a lap later my water pump broke and my engine temperature rocketed and I was forced to retire from the heat.

Race 1 – Despite the DNF in the last heat due to my other strong heat results I qualified 11th for Race 1 and knew it was possible to gain a good result with the pace we now had in dry conditions. I made a good start and was quickly into the top 9. From then on I got my head down and made my way through the pack. The engine wasn’t strong though and a lack of power was hindering my charge. I had to pull of some big lunges to get through but my persistence paid off and by lap 7 I was into 3rd place. Tony Lavanant was the next man on my list but unfortunately I ran out of laps before I could pass him. Nevertheless 3rd from 11th on the grid was a great result it was nice to take to the podium again and with the speed and momentum we had, we were sure favourites for the race 2 victory.

Race 2 – I was fired up for Race 2 and wanted to show how fast me and my Gillard/TM package could go. I made a good start and managed to pass Kevin Janssen into the first corner. After lap 1 I was in 2nd with the newly crowned Champion Lavanant in 1st he had a bit of a gap but my chassis was superb and by lap 3 I was all over him. I made my move into the tight left hand corner and took the lead. At this point I knew all I had to do was settle into my rhythm and the race was mine. But three corners later I was off the circuit. Lavanant had hit me off into the first corner whether he did it deliberately or he just had no brain I don’t know. This left me 34th 100 yards behind the guy in 33rd. I kept true to myself though and didn’t give up I tried my best and made some big lunges on the way back to 16th position only a scant 1 tenth off the fastest lap of the race whilst overtaking every lap.

Not the result we had hoped for but we once again showed that we were the class of the KZ2 field. After the dnf’s in Mariembourg and the crash in Varennes we finished a disappointing 7th out of 104 in the overall standings. What more is that if we hadn’t been punted off at Mariembourg or at the final race at Varennes then we would have been the European Champions for sure. But now we move on to WSK for the final race of the season in Zuera. I hope to finish on a high and hopefully gain a top 6 finish in the overall standings
